Warwick Dragway roars to life for a full weekend of racing on Saturday and Sunday.

The track will host round two of the region’s Track Championship with competitors vying for points for the club championship on Saturday while Sunday is the Six Banger Nationals – a separate event for six-cylinder cars only.

Committee member Matt Loy said with the first round of the Track Championships washed out after qualifying earlier this year and drag races keen to get back to the track after the winter break, there was sure to be plenty of cars competing.

“We have already got about a 130 pre-entered for the two days,” Loy said.

“Some will take part in both if they have a six-cylinder powered vehicle. Some have V8s so they’ll only do the Saturday. But a lot of them try to do both, some even bring a second car.”

Loy said the club was keen to get back out onto their rebuilt facilities, opened earlier this year.

“The club’s going really well after our three-year covid and rebuild,” he said.

“We’ve actually just come off a three-month break we have in the colder weather and we’re ready to roar again.

“This meeting starts off a busy program. We have four meetings in the next eight weeks. Then we have a three-month break and do it again.

“It really great, everyone has adapted to the new track and facilities and we’ve had really great events. They’ve all be really successful since we’ve opened up. They’ve been well-supported.

“For this one we know we have people coming from as far away as Cairns. We have people coming from Sydney and Northern NSW and they come from as far west as St George and Roma.”

Qualifying roars off at 10am on Saturday, going through to Saturday night – probably 9pm.

“Drag racing is an event that gets more spectular at night, spectators love it at night,” Loy said.

“On Sunday it starts at 9am and goes through to 4pm.

“It’s a whole two days of racing.”

Loy said it promised to be a very exciting weekend on the track.

“On the Saturday everyone will be ready to roar and go at it. I think our first round of the club championship actually got rained out after qualifying so they’ll be all keen to get in and see who can get on top for the points for the year,” he said.

“The third round of this competition is then held as part of our annual event the Warwick Dragfest coming up in October, then we have the final round in November.

“We haven’t had Dragfest since 2019 because Covid affected us in 2020 and then there was the rebuild after that.

“It’s going to huge. I reckon we could have up to 250 competitors for that one. It’s going to be really good.”
