The newly refurbished Stanthorpe Swimming Pool, which had been open for just five days, has been temporarily closed due to safety concerns on 5 October.

The Stanthorpe Fitness Centre informed the community via Facebook that a defect was discovered after the refurbishment, posing a safety risk.

While it is not a health issue, the pool will remain closed until the problem is addressed.

“We know how much our community values the pool, and we are doing everything we can to get it back up and running as soon as possible,” the post assured.

Stanthorpe Swimming Club President Craig Magnussen remains optimistic that the issue will be resolved quickly.

“The Club is in contact with the Y and is hopeful it will be resolved soon without impacting our first club night or the meet and greet with Ben,” he said, referring to an upcoming event featuring swimming champion Ben Armbruster on 13 October.

Despite the brief opening period, the pool attracted a number of locals eager to cool off as temperatures climbed. The facility offers a range of activities including swimming lessons, squads, and casual laps.

Southern Downs Councillor Russell Wantling reflected on the significance of the Stanthorpe Pool, describing it as an integral part of the community.

“Growing up in the region, it was the highlight of our summer, and I can tell you I have done my fair share of laps up and down the lanes,” Cr Wantling said.

He emphasised the importance of swimming as a life skill, particularly in rural areas.

“Learning to swim is crucial, especially in regions like ours, where dams are close to residences. One drowning is too many,” he said.

“The Stanthorpe pool plays an important role in providing a safe environment for people of all ages to learn and practice swimming and it acts as a place for the community to meet, whether it’s through organised swimming club, keeping fit or simply cooling off in summer.”

As a councillor, Mr Wantling said he is proud to have a 50 metre pool as one of the community assets.

“I personally believe it should be one of our responsibilities as a council, to give every child or adult the opportunity to learn to swim. Having this facility available to all residents in the area is fantastic,” he said.

“It serves many purposes – whether for learning to swim, improving swimming skills under the guidance of a world-class coach at the Stanthorpe Swimming Club, or simply providing a social outlet to escape the summer heat.

“We are fortunate that previous councils had the foresight to build such a valuable resource and it’s something that other regions outside the Southern Downs envy.”
