Livestock agent ROSS ELLIS of McDougall and Sons brings us an update on the local lamb and cattle markets from last week…
Reasonable numbers were yarded for the main cattle and lamb markets this week with a fall across all sectors as the buyer resistance starts to build.
The good fresh specialty types were still commanding a reasonable return for the vendors. The subjective categories saw the biggest fall across the sales.
Cattle numbers
Vealer steers averaged 481.6c/kg topping at 805.2c/kg or $1200.13 to $2496.12
Vealer heifers averaged 440.9c/kg topping at 500c/kg or $1124.73 to $1662.50
Feeder steers averaged 487.6c/kg topping at 560.2c/kg or $2021.11 to $2899.04
Feeder heifers averaged 389.6c/kg topping at 456.2c/kg or $1545.68 to $1763.40
Yearling steers averaged 509c/kg topping at 560.2c/kg or $1560.53 to $2663.22
Yearling heifers averaged 435.8c/kg topping at 548.2c/kg or $1297.30 to $2105.09

Lambs topped at $191 to average $144.17 a drop of $16/head
Hoggets topped at $172 to average $132.04 a rise of $1/head
Ewes topped at $160 to average $72.23 a drop of $41/head
Wethers topped at $154 to average $140.42 a drop of $12/head
Rams topped at $132 to average $112.33 a drop of $40/head
Ewe lambs topped at $174 to average $161.04 a drop of $12/head
Ram lambs topped at $169 to average $132.55 a drop of $6/head
Total yarding of 1280 head saw the market back by an average of $16/head to $132.48
Pig and poultry numbers
Sows sold from $60 to $329, gilts to $196, Boars to $122, Pork from $172 to $193, stores from $91 to $168
Ducklings sold to $26, Geese to $40, Ducks to $25, Drakes to $32.50, parcel of Silky Hen chicks sold to $75, Guinea Fowl to $15, Roosters to $20, Pullets to $15, Hens to $15
McDougall and Sons sheep and lamb report
Agents today yarded 1280 head for the weekly sale the yarding was very mixed with some good trade and feed on lambs available.
The main numbers showed up in the light and seasonally affected types.
This combined with some light mutton and fewer buyers saw the market slide considerably.
Lambs topped at $191 to average $144.17 ($16down), hoggets topped at $172 to average $132.04 ($1up), ewes topped at $160 to average $72.23 ($41down), wethers topped at $154 to average $140.42 ($12down), rams topped at $132 to average $112.33 ($40down), lamb rams topped at $169 to average $132.55 ($6down), ewe lambs topped at $174 to average $161.04($12down).
The total yarding was at a considerable $16 per head lower than last week.
