Scheid, Baker share Wattles top honours

Aaron Scheid and Luke Baker shared the Wattles Rugby League Club’s most prestigious award when they were named joint winners of the Clifton Courier Shield as Players of the Year for 2011 at Wattles Annual Banquet and Presentation Night on Saturday evening.
The award is just reward for lock forward Scheid, an outstanding club stalwart who has enjoyed possibly his best season on field.
For back rower Baker it was his second Player of the Year award, having won Wattles top honour last year. The shield, which was first awarded in 1975, was presented by Clifton Courier owner Ted Rodgers.
It features 37 winners, the listed names among the club’s greatest players over its 45-year history, including Australian Test player Greg Platz and ARL/NRL players Robbie Tew and Tony Duggan.
Baker joins an exclusive group to have won the shield more than once, alongside club legend Cameron Hamblin (5), Sam Achilles (3) and Greg Platz (2).
Talented young front-rower Carl Gale collected the Rudds Pub Trophy as Wattles Colt of the Year, the Under 18’s “Clydesdales” representative completing an outstanding season that also saw him debut in first grade.
Fellow up and coming Under 18 front-rower Lee Lousick was named Junior Footballer of the Year, while classy lock forward Jimmy Johnson collected the Vince Bermingham Memorial Trophy as Under 18 Best and Fairest player.
Shane Webcke presented Brady Glass with the Tom Webcke Memorial Trophy as Wattles Clubman of the Year.
Special guests and presenters for the evening included current Penrith Panthers back Travis Burns, ex international and Brisbane Broncos star Shane Webcke, former international Greg Platz, all former Wattles players, and QRL juniors president Geoff Orman.
Club president Barry Glass presented a report to more than 220 guests, supporters and players who filled the Allora Community Hall, focusing on a very busy year for Wattles, “a very successful year”.
The president forecast “a bigger and better year in 2012 for the Wattles “Warriors” with the ongoing support of old and new members, players, sponsors and supporters”.
Another highlight of the night was a 20-year reunion of Wattles 1991 Under 18 Premiership winning side that included Shane Webcke.
The team was coached by Brendan Bange, captain Cameron Hamblin introducing the side to the banquet crowd on Saturday.
