Gremlins, Roosters – nothing between them

Stanthorpe Gremlins
The Gremlins and the Roosters – They were last year’s BRL grand finalists and there has been nothing between them all season. They are the two sides that have made all the running in 2012 and when they met on Saturday at Sullivan Oval for the President’s Cup, there was plenty to look forward to and they did not disappoint the large crowd.
Stanthorpe Gremlins could not have chosen a better day to hold their “pink charity” day and hats off to organisers for a fantastic event. The ladies were well catered for in the Pink marquee and, while not all of them were really intent on the scoreline, there were more than a few keeping a close eye on what was happening on the field.
The “Pink” Gremlins opened the scoring with a quick try, taking an early lead. The Roosters took a few plays to hit their straps but hit back and the scoreline, like the game, swung from end to end. As the clock ticked down late in the second half, the Roosters clung to a converted try lead before a good piece of individual work from Brad Crisp netted the Gremlins a much needed try. When Jason Wilmot converted, the scores were locked at 20-all with not a lot of time left on the clock.
In the final few minutes of the game there was some thrilling play from both sides as the ball was thrown around in broken play and each team defended their tryline strongly. In the end, the full-time hooter beat both sides and an entertaining game resulted in a draw.
There has been much speculation about the result, however, as the game was a regular BRL round of competition, there was no provision to play extra time. As the Roosters remain undefeated and lead the competition by two points, they were awarded the President’s Cup Trophy.
Accepting the trophy and the President’s Man of the Match award, Inglewood Rooster’s captain Matt Gainey said it had been a tough game and acknowledged the Gremlins’ effort, adding that he thought players from both sides would probably be sick of seeing each other by the end of the finals. The teams meet again this weekend, playing for the Patron’s trophy in Inglewood.
This is the only BRL game this weekend. Originally designated as a footy-free weekend, Inglewood and Stanthorpe play for the Patron’s trophy after postponing a game earlier in the season because of Representative duties.
In other BRL games last weekend, Killarney defeated Highfields 34-14 and Texas proved too strong for an under strength Wallangarra side 76-6.
