MG’S ON DISPLAY

The MG Sports car has always been one of the most sort after sports cars and over the Easter weekend more than 300 MG-faithful are expected in Toowoomba for the MG Car Clubs of Australia National Meeting.

Entries for the event, hosted by the MG Car Club of Qld Inc, have been received from devotees from throughout the country. Their travels however pale into insignifigence compared to those who are coming from New Zealand, Hawaii, South Africa, the Netherlands and the UK.

About 170 MGs with ages ranging from pre-war through to the ‘yet-to-be-released in Australia’ MG6 are expected be on show. The MG6 naturally will be the newest there is sure to be a great deal of interest surrounding the oldest entry. A 1927 MG 14/28 entered by Col Schiller of Cambooya. Schiller is also entering a 1929 18/80 and a 1937 SA majestic MG saloon. Other pre-war cars of note are a 1931 C type, 1934 K1 and 1935 NB. All are frequently used in local and interstate ontrack competitions.

As expected the model with most representation will undoubtedly be the MGB in its various forms of roadster and GT models. One of these, known affectionately to its owners Ross and Shez Letten as Blue B, will be an attention-getter as it is still in the livery used for its 19,000 km African trip late last year. It was one of a group of MGs that made the journey from Cape Town to Cairo (via Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan) and then on to Abingdon, the spiritual home of MG in England. The car will be driven on the Easter jaunt by Paul and Joke Halmans visitors from The Netherlands.

All cars will be out and about in Toowoomba and surrounds over the Easter weekend, however the best time for viewing the cars will be on Easter Saturday 30 March when the Concours (a competition based on originality and presentation of the car) is held at Heller Street Park. Spectators are welcome to come and view the cars with no charge for entry.

On Sunday some drivers will be testing their skills at a motorkhana while others will be on a social day run.

Monday there will be a sprint meeting where spectators are again welcome to view this event at no cost for entry. Other MG drivers will be taking part in an observation run in the Toowoomba district and surrounds. Passengers in the cars will be seeking answers to questions while the driver seeks to follow his navigator’s guide to the route.

On Tuesday there will be an exodus of MGs to destinations far and wide.
