Yes, it was a challenge in more ways than on the field. On the field the South West team did not come up with a win, but were far from disgraced.
Training remains an issue for these teams with players selected from Charleville and Augathella to Wallangarra and Killarney and most spots in between. The team had the opportunity for only one run together before the game.
The Rangers were quick to post points and midway through the first half held a convincing 26-nil lead.
Two converted tries close to half time narrowed the gap and South West was back in the hunt.
After the break both teams found the try line and south West trailed 36-30 with chances coming their way. Unfortunately they were unable to make the most of their opportunities and close to full-time the Rangers put the game beyond question with another four pointer taking the score to 40-30.
The Killarney contingent of Michael Marshall, Michael Bloomfield and Goondiwindi’s Lillo Stavenow proved a handful for the defence. John Trindall’s experience and ability shone as he made an impact with every touch.
Along with the others Tyson Mitchell, Brent Humphries and Matt Rouen have all earned themselves a trip to Hughenden. There was not much in this game at the finish and this group will are sure to be better next time they play as a group.
