‘Royal’ baby puts a spring in Casey’s step

Casey O'Connor.

For racing fans Spring is a great time of the year. Sensational racing on the big stage and closer to home our fantastic country cups.

But in my mind the highlight must surely be the safe arrival of champion mare Winx’s foal. The magnificent mare is the proud Mum of a filly foal.

Fans of the mare and racing enthusiasts in general mourned with the great mare when her first foal was still born after a trouble free pregnancy.

The anticipated birth of this foal was kept well out of the glare of publicity unlike her the earlier birth.

It was almost like the birth of a royal baby when pictures of mum and daughter were released on-line and to the press.

Of course, this is more that just another foal. She is by the champion colt Pierro and is a granddaughter of the great Lonrho. This of course is no guarantee that the little filly will be in the same stratosphere as her dam but it gives her a bit of a head start.

If she were ever to be put in the sale ring (which will never happen) there would be a lot of zeros in the selling price.

Can’t imagine that the filly will be far from Chris Wallers stables when she begins her racing career. No surprise the Master trainer was first on the visitors list after her birth.

Unless I jag the first four in the Melbourne Cup and it pays an astronomical amount of money this will do me as my highlight of Spring Racing 2022.

For those of you have a flutter in this weekend’s Caulfield Cup – best of luck finding the winner in a tough field. A really rough trifecta I like if these all get a run is Sheraz; Vow and Declare and Montefilia.

Good punting
