EVANS REVELS IN CONDITIONS

The Stanthorpe Ladies Midweek golfing group enjoyed perfect conditions last week as they teed off in their Single Stableford competition.

The course was an absolute picture after the recent rain and bout of warm weather and Lorraine Evans demonstrated her skills on the 12th and 17th holes. On her way to a win she collected the pin shots on both holes.

Filomena Silver is well on her way to lowering her handicap after an excellent round. She was very encouraged after finishing runner up to Evans but not before a countback. Lynette Ludlow settling for a spot in the run down. She also held the pin shot at the 5/14th.

HEAT NO PROBLEM FOR CROQUET PLAYERS

In spite of the extreme heat the Warwick, Mallet players were happy to play throughout the week.

On Saturday 4/3 there were only four players on court playing Association Croquet.

Peter Campbell and Lesley Grayson scored an 18-14 win over Dorothy Gartery and Tony Hinde in the one game played.

On Tuesday (7/3) several Stanthorpe players joined their Warwick counterparts, and three games were played. Tony Hinde showed all of his experience when he Pegged Out on 26 points in the games against Jenny Tunbridge. The score 26-12. HILTON SHRUGS OFF THE BRIDESMAID TAG FOR A WIN

Stanthorpe Sporters golfers played the back nine last Sunday which gave all players two chances to claim a pin shot.

After some discussion on the appropriate starting time, players finally hit off. It was a warm morning, and the mercury was rising rapidly which may have been the ulterior motive of those who seemed to have an interest in aiming for the shadows of the trees.

Dick Hilton finally shrugged off the bridesmaid tag and returned to the winner’s circle as he has been threatening to do for some weeks. His nett 24 was the best for the day and he walked away with the top prize. A steady round from Stuart Rayner saw him return nett 27 which was good enough for the runner’s up prize.

Brendan Barker returned the Best Gross score of the day. Barker needing 41 strokes for the nine holes. It was probably a couple of shots more than his usual best but a good score in the very hot conditions.

In a surprising turn of events neither of the pin shorts were claimed. Several players reporting they were “very close” however very close, may be good but not good enough to win the prize.

A date has now been set for the Maureen Bates Memorial Day which was washed out a few weeks ago. The popular event will now be played on Sunday 2nd April.

The format of the day is a two person Ambrose., Play gets underway with a shot gun start at 9am on that Sunday morning.

Rex Bates will once again sponsor the annual event. This is a popular day on the Stanthorpe golfing calendar so be sure to arrange your playing partner and get your name on the time sheet at the club as soon as possible.

MARANO AND HOOD PIKE TROPHY WINNERS

A good field teed off on Saturday in a Stroke round at the Stanthorpe Golf Course. Many in the field were also playing the third and final round of the Pike Trophy. For some there was the expectation that a great round in the excellent but hot conditions would benefit their score in the hunt for the Pike Trophy. The winners of the Men’s and Ladies trophies were Nat Marano and had vastly different experiences.

Nat Marano headed into the final round of the Pike Cup holding a convincing lead after excellent early rounds. His third round score did not come into play as he was the comfortable winner of the Men’s Pike Trophy based on his earlier rounds and his name will now be engraved on the plaque as the 2023 winner.

Christine Hood on the other hand approached the final day’s play from a different perspective knowing she needed a very good round to seal a come from behind win. She delivered and claimed the Ladies’ trophy by a narrow margin.

Saturday’s stroke event was also played for another annual club trophy, the Nuffield Cup.

Junior golfer, Hamish Adam, continues to show his potential and returned nett 69 in the Men’s event. It was the winning score and he claimed Nuffield Cup as well as the winner’s prize. Darryl Boekholt with nett 70 was the runner up.

The ladies event resulted in another win for Christine Hood. A score of nett 76 put her two shots clear of runner up Fiona Kelly, on nett 78.

Richard Reardon claimed the Men’s pin shot at three. Nathan Stibbard was on song at 12 and Doug Henderson at 17.

Filomena Silver held the ladies’ pin at three, Helen Jones at 12 and Christine Hood at 17.

An eagle at 1/10 was good enough to land Ipswich visitor Rob Thompson the Pro Pin. Scott Constable collected at 5/14 and Matt Burgess at 9/18.

The birdies nest at hole three was claimed by Darryl Boekholt.

In the Men’s run down, it was a ball to scores of nett 71 (Rob Thompson, Scott Constable, Matt Burgess, David Burgess and Alan Kerr).

This Saturday 4BBB Stableford is scheduled as it is the final Saturday of the month. The round sponsored by club members, John Green and Brendan McMillan.

It is a shot gun start at noon with registration to be completed by 11.30am to give the starter plenty of time to organise starting tee allocation.

WARWICK LADIES MAKE THEIR MARK IN CLIFTON

This past week a group of 19 Ladies who regularly play in the Warwick mid-week competition headed to Clifton to play in the Annual Clifton Open Day.

It was good to see the Warwick Golf club so well represented at the first Open Day of the year.

Congratulations to Judy Lester who won the Division One Stableford with a score of 38 points. Narelle Norris was also a winner claiming the prize in the Veterans Event. Marg Adcock, Anna Cox, Janet Davis and Liz Cockram were other prize winners on the day.

Many of the large group headed home with raffle prizes.

While this group enjoyed the hospitality in Clifton there was a group who played in a nine-hole competition at home base.

In this competition, it was Tub Ingall who took line honours with 15 points. The runner up was Ann Tomkins (14), Lyn Lane (C/B) and Lois Wilson (12), Jan Aspinall (11), Annice Payne (9) and Gill Young (8).

The Ladies juggling their timeslots, as the men’s shootout competition took over the course for many hours.

MIXED TEAM BATTLE FOR MATCHPLAY START

On Saturday at the Warwick Golf Club the good field of Mixed teams battled it out for the top eight positions and the right to advance to the Matchplay component of the Annual Lane Cup.

Jay Roberts played with her Mother Trish. The pair combined well and a score of 58 nett won the prize. Thanks to Brown Nolan and Watt Accountants for their excellent sponsorship of the day which is greatly appreciated.

Jay and Trish made it to the finals last year, and no doubt will be a foce to be reckoned with again this year.

Liz and Eamon Cockram returned nett 61 to claim the runner’s up position but not before a countback with Molly and Shane Scotney.

Charlie and Kath Morrison (62) were next on the list of qualifiers then followed Michelle Wright and Rod Hansen (64), Michael Banks and Helen Olsen (64), Tony and Majella Kahler (64), Di Johnston and Wayne Wells (65), Slim Eldridge and Danielle Seibel (65), Margaret and Gary Adcock (66), Geoff Lee and Carole Brandon (67), Roslyn Darton and Josh Manwaring (67), Ted King and Joely Singleton (68), Yvonne Pinington and Don Stewart (69), Mark Paroz and Lyn McKillop (69), Peter Gribbin and Mary Young (69), Ian and Janine Stewart (71) and finally Vicki and Terry Bennett (73).

It was a pleasure to see so many couples out on the course together. It was a great day, with some excellent scores were the scores.

The top eight qualifying couples go through to the next round of the Lane Cup and battle it out in the Matchplay format and will be playing off the Match Index.

Lowest marker to go to scratch, and the difference in handicaps to work out the remaining shots given to the other three players.

For example, if the lowest marker’s handicap is 13, and the highest is 33, then the player on 33 plays off the handicap of 20 for the day, and of course the match index is used.

Men will play off the blue markers and Women off the red markers. The draw will be on the board. Players are asked to carefully check the date that each round is to be completed by.

This Saturday (25/3), the field will be playing in Presidents Day. Members are invited to support the club’s hard working Presidents Scott McLennan, and Margaret Adcock.

Next Wednesday the ladies will be playing the Monthly Warwick Sandstone 9/18 hole, Single Stableford thanks to the continued sponsorship of Wayne and Wendy. This is another popular day on the monthly calendar.

A reminder to Ladies that qualifying for the Gertrude McLeod begins on the 1 March, and the Qld Brooch is the 11 and 22 March.

Congratulations to all the winners, during the past week and well done to all who participated in the competitions. Remember, without a field of competitors, there would be no winners.

SHOOTOUT SHENANIGANS

On Wednesday, the Sporters Danny Lyons Shootout was played in warm but excellent conditions and the course looked a picture as the field set out to do battle.

John Irwin Mal Gallaway and Doug Rickett were early casualties.

At four Gary RS was the next to perish. Mick Banks Ross Bella and Gary Adcock followed suit at the fifth, sixth and seventh.

Garry Hanson perished at the ninth leaving Stuart Wade, David Hynes, Ray Dudley, Don Stewart, Al Matthews, Ian Skillon, Charlie Morrison, Danny Lyons, Keith Clarke and Darryl Bain still alive and in contention at the half way mark.

With six holes remaining Don Stewart, Ian Skillon, and Keith Clarke had joined the spectators leaving seven in contention.

The field fell away in the final few holes and Ray Dudley battled well to be there until the 17th hole.

The last men standing were Stu Wade and Darrell Bain left to battle it out up the 18th. Both players had their share of tree trouble with their second shots. However, it was Darrell Bain who eventually sunk the winning putt to claim the Danny Lyons Sports $500 voucher.

We understand there may have been some genuine concerns for Ross Bell when his hot favourite for the event Charlie Morrison came to grief at the 14th. (It is only money, Ross).

Pleased to confirm Rosco has recovered. There is always next year.

PLEMMING TAKES SPORTES WIN

With a field of 19 regular Sporters involved in the Sporters shootout numbers in the regular weekly competition were down to 31.

Despite the smaller field there were some excellent scores in the Stableford comp.

Tim Plemming finished the round with a winning score of 37 points with a comfortable buffer to runner up Josh Mainwaring (34 points).

Figuring in the run down were Daniel Bowles (c/b) and Craig Burgess (33); Ron Munro 32 and Peter Balfour (c/b) and Steve Clare (c/b both on 33 points.

Mal Crawford collected at the Pro Pin at 13. Sharing the spoils with him were Malcolm Galloway and Greg Wallace.

The winner and runner up figured in the Nearest the Pin. Tim Plemming did best at the seventh and Josh Manwaring at the 11th.

WARWICK RUNNER’S UP

The Warwick Golf course was closed Sunday to members due to the Golf in Australia comepitition. Rhys Farrell captained the Warwick team who did a great job to finish a close second behind the winning team, Toowoomba visitors, City Golf Club.

Warwick had early success winning their morning game against Middle Ridge.

Well done to the team.
