A group of hardy sailors from the Sandgate Sailing club in Brisbane were joined by members of

the Warwick Sailing Club at the weekend for the Annual Frostbite Regatta on Leslie Dam, Warwick.

The group held their annual meet and greet, at the Sandy Creek Hotel on the Friday night before the

sails were hoisted on Saturday.

There were nine craft competing in the Regatta according to one of the organisers, Warwick Sailing Club treasurer Andrew Dunn.

“Although it is only a social regatta things get pretty competitive on the

course and there was some tacking and jibbing as boats jockeyed for better use of the wind,” Dunn said.

He said said there were five Weta craft, a Hobie Cat, a Surf Cat an MG and one Trailor Sailor on the

dam.

“It was an excellent cross section of boats,” according to Dunn.

Craft are handicapped according to boat and sail size.

Dunn said the annual Frostbite Regatta has been held for more than 10 years and was instigated when “a

couple of larrakins decided the Brisbane sailors had no clue what frost was all about”.

For any uninitiated who were at Leslie Dam at the weekend they now have a fairly good idea what frost is.

The majority of competitors and spectators camped in tents caravans, motor home and some brave

souls in swags at the Dam.

Safety is always a prime concern and two IRB’s were on the course at all times in case of any

mishaps. Dunn confirmed conditions were quite cool on the water as he was a member of one of

the IRB crews.

There was one minor mishap when a boat suffered minor damage in a shallow section of the dam

however that was quickly repaired on Saturday night.

Dunn said it was another successful weekend.
