CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDED ON LAST END

The final of the Southern Downs Men’s District Bowls Association (SDMDBA) Two Bowl Triples Championship was played at the weekend with the Tenterfield/Texas team of Neville Richardson, Ray Williams and Neville Morris scoring a narrow 19-16 victory on the final end against a team from the Summit.

The sectional games, played on Saturday, saw some very close results but the best was left to last with the final, held at Texas Bowls Club on Sunday, decided on the very last end.

Matthew Shepherd (Southern Cross), Carl Sutherland )The Summit) and Peter Collis (Warwick East) 18 defeated Cameron Wilson (Southern Cross), Adrian Jackson (The Summit) and Jamie Zamprogno The Summit) 15.

The Summit team of Rob Capelli, David Stibbard and Tyler Sweeney defeated 21 defeated Nick Farmer (Tannymorel), Adam Tozer (Tannymorel) and Aaron McKinney 20.

Brian Brown (Stanthorpe), Frank Taylor (The Summit) and Dale Callaghan (Inglewood) 20 defeated the Goondiwindi team of Steve Ellison, David ter Herde and Doug Kitchner 18.

Neville Richardson (Tenterfield), Ray Williams (Texas), and Neville Morris (Texas) 19 defeated Craig Smith (Inglewood), Brad Smith (Inglewood) and Gary Roberts 5.

At the business end of the comepitition on Sunday in the semifinals Capelli, Stibbard and Sweeney scored a 19 – 11 win over Shepherd, Sutherland, and Collis.

Richardson, Williams and Morris defeated Brown, Taylor and Callaghan 17-13.

After two days of strong competition the final on Sunday came down to the last end.

Neville Richardson (Tenterfield), Ray Williams (Texas), and Neville Morris (Texas) scored a 19-16 win over the Summit Team of Rob Capelli, David Stibbard and Tyler Sweeney.

The SDMDBA congratulates the overall winners and all bowlers who played in the event.

GOOD DRAW NUMBERS TO CROQUET LAWN

The lawn at the Stanthorpe Croquet club was quite busy on Thursday with a larger field of players enjoying Golf Croquet.

Beth Schottelius, Jan Hegarty and Maria Ryan all played well each scoring a Hole in One during the games. While Sue Stanley-Harris went one better and score two Hole in One.

Earlier in the week a small group played Association Croquet on Saturday.

Tony Hinde and Lesley Grayson scored a 19-7 win over Peter Campbell and Dorothy Gartery (7).

TURKEY TRIPLES GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT

Unsettled weather conditions looked likely to derail the Turkey Tripes games on Wednesday (5/7) however by 10am the weather had cleared, and the event got the green light.

Congratulations to the Southern Cross Warwick team of Geoff Creighton Cita Weier and Gordon The Assay who played some very good bowls to win the day with an impressive score of 29.

The runners up were the team of Tammy Robinson, Toby Robinson and Tony Schubert. Heir score 19. They were not the only team to score 19.

There were three teams in all who finished with 19 however after some intense scrutiny and a countback it was Tony’s team who got the chocolates.

The club thanks all those visitors who played and the members and volunteers who helped make he day successful.

The August Turkey Triples will be played on Wednesday 2 August.

On Saturday the club hosted regular Social Bowls with Barry Murphy and Dot Rankin scoring a four-shot win over Caroline Draper and Greg Hammond. The final score 17-13.

On an adjacent rink, C Denning, Polly Lay and Bruno Stefanon had a convincing win over Colin Denning, David Draper and Jack Bel. The score 27 – 10.

A reminder upcoming events at the Stanthorpe Bowls Club include the final of the 2023 Club championship between Ladies champion Wendy Hurnall and Men’s A champion Gary Trevena; the “Veterans” over 70 competition and the club’s “Consistency Competition.”

WARM CONDITIONS, HOT SCORES

Luke Steffen dominated the June Clifton Benchrest Shooting Club Competition held at the Laurie Bowe range at the weekend in warmer than predicted temperatures with minimal wind.

The competition was of a high standard and was reflected in the results.

Steffen scored a win in the Men’s Rimfire. His score 583.16. Steffen also scored two of the three Best Cards of the Day. In the Hunter class he scored 198.6/200.20 and tied with Anthony Bowe in the Rabbit and Crow (150.7/150.15). Wrapping up a good day Steffen also won the Senior Centrefire with .4438 and had the smallest group of .304.

Jason Edwards finished in second place in the Senior Centrefire. His score .7112. third place went to Anthony Bowe (.8410).

Bowe finished second in the Men’s rimfire was Anthony Bowe. His score of 582.22 only 0.94 shy of the winner. Jason Edwards (575.17) finished third.

Vincent Alberry (541.8) won the Factory Rimfire class.

Margaret Sullivan scored a win in the Women’s Open Rimfire (567.9). In second place was Ashleigh Brown (539.7).

The junior Rimfire was won by Cooper Steffen (580.20) who also had one of the three Best Cards of the Day; the RBA (241.11/250.25). Rebekah Robinson (544.11) finished in second place in the junior event.

The next benchrest comepitition at the Lawrie Bowe Range is scheduled for this Sunday 16th July.

KEHL, LEE AND COCHRANE CLIFTON WINNERS

Rob Kehl, Bill Lee and John Cochrane came back from a round one loss to win the Clifton Courier Bowls Day at Clifton Bowls Club on Saturday.

The trio had a loss in a tight game in round one with eventual runners up Prem Ryatt, Gordon Jago and Adele Pearce beating them 12-10.

However, they started to build momentum from there and in their second game they scored a very comfortable 16-5 win over Les Smith, Annette Larkin and Brian Betts.

The Ryatt, Jago and Pearce also had a second round win defeating Neil Postle, Chazz Pearce and Desley Kehl 11 – 9.

Also in round one Neil Postle, Chazz Pearce and Desley Kehl defeated Les Smith, Annette Larkin and Brian Betts 13 – 8.

Looking ahead this Saturday is a club trophy day. Please submit names by 12.30 ready for a 1pm start. It is a casual dress day and everyone is welcome.

Wednesday 26 July – Mid Week Fours at 11 am sponsored by Eastern Downs Realty.

Nominations for the Club Selected Triples are now being accepted. A nomination fee of $3. applies – and must be paid by the closing date 22 July 2023. Weather permitting the competition will be played on 29-30 July weather permitting from 9.30am.

QUIET WEEKEND AT THE CROSS

A quiet weekend at the Southern Cross Bowls Club with just a handful of social games played on Sunday.

Two games of Triples and a game of pairs were played. The winners with the highest score were Kim Hankinson, Kev Mooney and Val Gray who defeated Dave Scotney, Linda Hartley and Barry Frame 27 to 19.

Saturday, 15 July is Presidents Day and presentations at the Cross. There will be a BBQ at 11am followed by social bowls. Be at the club by noon or phone the clubhouse on 4661 1876 after 11am to get a game. Everyone including beginners are welcome to come along and have some fun.

Sunday 23 July – It is Cool Scarves and Silly Socks fun day. Play Starts 1pm. Contact Clark 0427 673 277 to put your name down. Again everyone is welcome.

Sunday, 30 July – Jumper and Jazz Fours – a 9am start. Contact Clark to nominate your team.

A reminder, if you are not financial, you cannot play as a member, you can’t nominate a person for a position on the committee or accept a position or vote at the AGM and most importantly you are not eligible to win the members draw.

NUMBERS DOWN IN SATURDAY COMP

Ten bowlers from the Summit Bowls Club were involved in District games over the weekend which had an impact on numbers playing social bowls. Only one game of pairs and a game of triples were played on Saturday afternoon. Rod Crome and Rod Newlands scored a 19-14 win over Peter Balmer and Pam Moore while Brian Brown, Maree Ball and Eddie Zanatta scored a one shot win over Margaret Harvey, Keith Mungall and Paul Zamprogno. The final score 12-11.

A reminder to members that nominations are open for The Summit Men’s Two Bowl Triples to be played will be played on 5 August will close on Saturday 29 July. More nominations are needed for this event.

The draw has been released for the upcoming Pennants competition.

The Summit first division team will be playing at Texas and the second division side will be play at Tenterfield. The Summit Sides will be selected shortly, and trial games will be played.

MONTHLY EVENT CANCELLED

The Warwick Bowls Club was forced to cancel their Monthly Triples event on Tuesday (4/7) due to the wet conditions.

Conditions improved later in the week and social bowls were played on Saturday. Michael Dungey and Brian Black defeated Richard Tartan and Russell Bean 25-17.

M. Cirson and John Ruhle scored a 21-12 win over Pamela Kerr and Percy Cutmore.

Nominations are now open for the Warwick club’s Self Selected Fours – ($2 Nomination, pay at the window).
