Fabulous four state finals bound

Four Summit bowlers are set to play off for the Queensland State Champion of Champions title in Mackay in October.

Ther fours team of Darren Stanley, Rob Capelli, Steve Martin and Mark Spiller earned the spot after travelling to Chinchilla to represent the Southern Downs Men’s District Bowls Association in the Group Three playoffs at weekend.

In a tense and drawn out final on Sunday morning the Summit bowlers eventually got the better of the Condamine District Bowls Association team of Garry Schulz, Greg Stanton, Philip ‘Whoopa’ Lane and Noel Corban.

If the fours final was a drawn out affair, then the final of the pairs was a marathon.

Two experienced teams slogged it out for a total of four hours and 15 minutes.

The experienced Summit pair of Steve Martin and Mark Spiller eventually went down by 10 shots to Roma bowlers Laurie Guihot and John Hammond.

The singles competition was won by Roma bowler John Hammond who figured in the pairs win.

The weather conditions were perfect, and the Chinchilla Bowls Club presented their green in outstanding condition for a comepitition the level of the playoffs. Those tasked with preparing the green received compliments everyone who was involved in the comepitition.
