Stanthorpe Men's Foursomes champions Matt Waterworth (l) and Mick O'Brien (r) receive their trophies from Nikki Waterworth

STANTHORPE GOLFERS SPOILT FOR CHOICE

members of the Stanthorpe Golf Club were spoilt for choice at the weekend with ample opportunity to spend some time on the golf course. On Saturday there was a Single Stableford competition and on Sunday the Men’s and Ladies’ Foursomes championships.

Saturday’s round was kindly sponsored by Lorraine Evans and Ian Pickering who provided the prizes for the day.

Lyle Bryant’s round of 37 put him one shot clear of the chasers in the men’s competition. Key to his win was his ability to stay out of the water hole at 15 and successfully putting from off the green which he did with great effect during the round.

A handful of players returned 36 points and the countback was drawn into play. After some forensic examination Max Hunter was identified as the runner up.

In the Ladies competition Lyn Ludlow returned the winning score of 35 points again one point ahead of runner up Nikki Waterworth who settled for runner up.

Lyle Bryant claimed the pin shot at three and Matt Waterworth at 12.There were no takers at 17.

The Ladies pin at three also went to the comepitition winner, Lyn Ludlow while Nikki Waterworth held 12 and Chrstine Hood had success at 17.

Jason Clear claimed the Pro Pin at 1/10; Eri Ree at 5/14 and Keith Jones at 9/18. The birdies nest at 5 was shared by Dan Folkers and Keith Jones. The Men’s run down went 35 points and better and the ladies 33 and better.

The highlight of the day was the success of two players who claimed the Scott Constable challenge – recording 12 points on the last four holes. First it was Alan Kerr who managed the feat and that was soon followed by Keith Jones doing the same.

The prize offered by Scott Constable was a new pair of golf shoes. Amid suggestion they receive one shoe each it appears there will be a qualifying play off in the near future.

QUALITY GOLF IN FOURSOME CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Sunday the Stanthorpe Golf Club’s Men’s and Ladies Foursomes championships attracted smaller fields however what was lacking in quantity was overshadowed by quality. Both competitions were sponsored by the Stanthorpe Golf club.

Hot on the heels of their one two finish on Saturday, Lyn Ludlow and Nikki Waterworth proved a strong combination and claimed the Ladies championship. The nett winning team was Helen Jones Margie Locke.

The winner of the men’s event was not as clear cut. A play off between Matt Waterworth and Mick O’Brien and Matt and Andy Burgess decided the title holders in the Men’s ‘A’ division Matt Waterworth and Mick O’Brien went on to claim the title. Team Burgess unlucky as they had a lost ball to contend with in the last nine holes of the 27 hole event.

The result in the ‘B’ division was also close, but it was Sporters President Ray Thorn and Terry Roser who came claimed the title. Brendon Barker and Danny Folkers won the best overall nett.

There is more foursomes play to come later in the year when the club hosts the mixed championships.

Next Saturday, 19 August, golfers will tee off in another Stableford event sponsored by club members, Nathan Stibbard and Marie Cook. There is a time sheet for the day on the board at the club.

A reminder teams must register for the Hello Yellow Chairty Golf Day on Sunday 27th August. Proceeds of the day which is sponsored by the Stanthorpe Community Bank go to the Stanthorpe Cancer Support Group. The day is open to golfers and non-golfers. Please contact the Golf club to register. This is a great day and benefits a wonderful local organisation that does much for those in our community who are in need.

KINDER CONDITIONS FOR MIDWEEK PLAYERS

The field of 67 who stepped out on to the Warwick golf course for the mid-week comepitition on Wednesday (9/8) found condition far kinder than the previous week.

At the end of the round there was a log jam on 38 points.

Jesse Harris eventually claimed the pole position with Ron Cruice runner up and Brian Thomas relegated to a ball in the run down.

Stewie Wade was on his own on 37 points and there was the clutch of players on 36 points included Clayton Frank, Peter Gribbin, John Brandon, Mal Galloway, Keith Farrell, and Eddie “Big Cods” Kemp. Rounding things out on 35 points were Ross Kingston and Ian Stewart.

Ray Dudley finished on top at the Pro Pin 13th followed by Mark Paroz and Stewie Wade.

Nearest the pins were Rob Kahler (fifth), 7th Ray Dudley (ninth) Don Iedema, Greg Carey (11th) and Clayton Frank (16th).

ICY CONDITIONS FOR MIDWEEK LADIES

The small group of ladies who played the midweek comepitition in Stanthorpe last Wednesday (9/8) received a little reminder that it is still winter after all in Stanthorpe as an icy wind blew across the course.

Helen Jones, a seasoned campaigner in Stanthorpe conditions brushed aside the conditions to win the event with a score of 32 points. Runner up Mei Bell was not far away. Her score 30 points. Lisa Stuart won the run down with 29 points. Lisa again excelled around the greens and picked up the pin shots on the 5/14th and the 17th. Mary-Jane Hese continues to improve each week and was not far from the top scores returning 28 points.

New comer, Denise Arlich who has been receiving coaching lessons at the club on Friday afternoons from Mei Bell and Lisa Stuart joined the Ladies. Denise is working towards her handicap and no doubt her name figuring in comepitition results shortly.

DOUBLE CELEBRATION FOR BIRTHDAY GIRL

Trish Bell had plenty of reason to celebrate last week. Not only did Trish win the midweek red Stableford competition with a great score of 40 points she also celebrated the win on her birthday.

Runner up Annie Payne was hot on her heels returning 39 points. They were followed by then Mel McLennan (38) , Janine Stewart 37, Liz Cockram and Di Johnston (34) and Yvonne Pinington and Judy Lester (33).

The Pro Pin on the 16th was hotly contested with Mel McLennan and Judy Lester both in the hole on their second shot. Each adding a gobble to their tally. Yvonne was just 50mm away and Janine was 340mm away.

The midweek round was kindly sponsored by Rose City Premium Meats

KEOGH PLAYS A TOP ROUND

Donna Keogh showed on Saturday that although she does not play often, she is a very capable golfer. Keogh returned 89 off the stick for a winning nett score of 61. Her round included four pars and a birdie on the 13th.

It was a day where some of the best score of the year were posted by the members of the Warwick Ladies Golf Club in the stroke round off the red markers.

Yvonne Pinington was another player very pleased with her 93 off the stick and a nett round of 63. Yvonne round included three pars and a birdie on the 5th. The player who prefers not to chip gave it a go on the fifth and put it in for a birdie and a gobble!

Such is the Ying and Yang of golf; courtesy of their goods rounds today both players have received a significant drop in their handicaps. Donna’s handicap dropped by 3.5 and Yvonne’s by 2.2.

The bonus for Yvonne is that she now finds he way onto the shootout board thanks to her great round.

The remainder of the field returned more sedate scores. Ann Tomkins (72 nett), Marg Adcock had a welcome back 73 nett. Liz Cockram also returned 73 nett, Mel McLennan (with a gobble on 12) & Di Evans (74 nett) , Gwen Mills , Anne Lyons and Carole Brandon all with 75 nett also featured in the rundown.

There will be no women’s competition on Sunday.

The Ladies played the mid-week medal on Wednesday of this week – results will feature in next week’s paper.

OPEN WIN FOR MCLENNAN; ACE FOR ADCOCK

The Warwick Open had a little bit of everything – great conditions, great golf , excellent scores and even a hole in one.

In the midst of the comepitition on Sunday it did not take long for news to filter across the course that Garry Adcock had aced the 11th. I understand there may have been a few to greet him in the clubhouse at the end of his round after his ETA was posted on social media.

Well done Garry – there must be something about the 11th and Adcock family – it is the same hole Marg aced a while back – what are the odds of that happening I wonder.

After two solid days of comepitition congratulations to Kirs McLennan who finished with a winning score of 144 gross. Rhy Farrell was the runner up with a great score also of 149 Gross.

The overall nett winner was Josh Manwaring who returned 139 nett just ahead of runner up Dave Speedy 140 nett.

Comepitition in the A Grade nett could not have been closer with Mitch McLennan winning on a countback from mark Parox after both players returned 142 nett.

Geoff Lee won the B grade gross with a score of 170 off the stick. The runner up Mark Simmonds. Al Matthews returned the Best nett score in B Grade (146 nett) ahead of runner up Slim Eldridge (147).

The winner of the C Grade Gross, Don Idema returned 186 one shot ahead of runner up jet Jensen. The Nett C Grade winner Rick Mills had a score of 148 nett. The runner up Kel Lucas 150 nett.

Congratulations to all the winners. A big thank you to the green keepers, the course was presented in magnificent comepitition. Thanks also to the staff at the Pro Shop for their organisation and to Bridies bar and Bistro who ensured no one suffered the same fate as Bourke and Wills.

The sponsors of the Warwick Open, churches of Christ are thanked for their support of the event and Stanthorpe Golf.
