Stanthorpe Golf Stableford

Stanthorpe golfers played a stableford event on Saturday 17 February, the day sponsored by local travel agency, HelloWorld with a good field of local players and a number of visitors turned out for the day’s competition.

The men’s event was closely contested and a good score of 41 points from club captain, Brad Silver, was the winning score. Brad’s form had been a bit up and down of late and this was one of his better results. A very good front nine set up the win and enough done on the back nine to secure the victory.

Runner up went to Richard Reardon who was one point back on 40 points. His round was almost opposite the winner, with the front nine being a few shots over, but a good second nine brought him back into contention. Minor placings in the field went to Brendan McMillan and Darrell Boekholt, both players again being one point further back on 39 points.

The ladies’ event was won by Lynette Ludlow who was well ahead in the ladies’ field on 36 points. Her round was fairly even for the two nines with no particular bad holes recorded. In second place was Filomena Silver (who didn’t want to see Brad have all the glory) on 29 points. She just managed to hold out the others with Kay Webb and Linda Kelly both returning 28 points for the run down.

Hamish Adam demonstrated his skill by winning the pin shot at 12 as well as collecting for best approach at holes 1/10 and 9/18. Other men’s pin shots claimed by Alex Smithers at 3 and Todd Sutherland at 17. The remaining pro-pin went to vice-captain Greg Fraser who had best approach at 5/14.

Ladies’ pins and pro-pins results were led by Linda Kelly who had best approach at 2/11 as well as NTP at hole 12 and hole 17. Remaining pin shot was won by Filomena Silver at 3 and the day’s ladies’ winner, Lynette Ludlow, collected the remaining pro-pin at 7/16.

A note of interest for all players re the Golfer of the Year event, it has been running since the start of the year. All players who have played in an event up till now have been earning points for this event. To remain in the event, players need to financial by the due date, March 1 2024.

The next few weeks have a number of Apple and Grape events with next Saturday 24 February being a single stroke for the Apple and Grape Cup sponsored by Crisp’s Coaches. The field for this event is getting quite large so all players who have registered their playing intentions should note that tee off time has been brought forward by 30 minutes to allow for the increased numbers in the field. Please adjust your watches and turn up half an hour earlier for you tee off time. Wednesday golfers will play the Apple and Grape stableford event. To book tee times for these events, players need to go to the on-line time sheet.

Friday 1 March is the Apple and Grape, two-person ambrose event, also sponsored by Crisp’s Coaches. Where the other events are on-line booking, intending players need to use the time sheet at the club, or ring to book your spot. The time sheet for this event is filling up fairly quickly.

Stanthorpe Sporters

Stanthorpe Sporters golfers played the back nine on Sunday 18 February with a number of Sporters golfers from Warwick joining in the day’s play.

The local competition was a stroke event and the visitors continued the day by playing an ambrose for the final nine holes. Pleasing that a number of locals also joined in with the visitors for the nine hole ambrose event.

Local winner of the stroke event was Brad Silver, continuing his good form from Saturday, his score of nett 22 was well ahead of the rest. Stew Rayner was not far off and his nett 25 secured runner up spot. Completing the prize list was Ivan Juriss by collecting the run down prize as well as the best gross score for the day.

An upcoming Sporter’s event is the Maureen Bates Memorial event which is scheduled for Sunday 17 March. The competition is a two-person ambrose played over nine holes. Golf, raffle and snacks is the usual format of the day. A time sheet for the day will be available at the club. Hopefully a good field will turn out for this day which has proved to be quite popular in previous years.

Sporters will be on again next Sunday 25 February with tee off at 8.00 am and the front nine will be in play.

Saturday, 17 February we contested the Secretary’s Pen, kindly sponsored by our good friends and supporters Hynes Newsagency. Jill Barnes was the best in the field, scoring 34 points to win the trophy. Mary Young was the runner up with 33 points, so it was the putt that got away hey Mary. Marg Adcock and Ann Lyons were next with 32 points, Lyn McKillop with 31, and Sam Hinze with 30 points to make the top 6 players. The scores ranged between Jill’s winning 34, down to 29 points, so it could have been anyone’s game.
