Stanthorpe Sporters
A small number for Sporters golfers on Sunday 10 March, perhaps the wind and possibility of a wet day kept some away. Those who did turn out were eager and keen to start.
Best score of the day came from Mark Lynam on nett 25 which was well in front of the rest. Mark’s round was a bit patchy to start but improved as he warmed up to the conditions of the day. His last four holes was played with only two over par and that secured the win.
Runner up went to Aaron Simmers who was three shots back on nett 28. Like the winner, his last four holes were good but a tricky start of a few too many over par didn’t help.
Terry Byrnes was also in the prize winners section, his nett 29 giving him the run down. Only one pin shot was collected on the day and that was from Paul Armstrong at seventeen.
Lowest gross score for the day was from Matt Burgess. His score of 38 off the stick was best for the day, managing to par every hole until the last two, both one over. Still a very good nine holes of golf.
Sporters golf next Sunday 17 March is the Maureen Bates Memorial 2 person ambrose and the day is again sponsored by Rex Bates. The day is open to all players, players without an AGU handicap will be accommodated. Time sheet for the day is on the board at the club.
Warwick Women’s Golf
Warwick has dominated the first Zone Open Day for the year, held in Pittsworth.
Eleven players travelled from Warwick to compete.
The club managed to scoop maximum points for this round.
Melanie McLennan won the A Grade Gross, Narelle Norris A Grade nett, Judy Lester B Grade Best nett, and Maria C Grade best stableford. Clifton Open Day is next, on 20 March, the nomination form is on the board in the ladies room.
The event was one of the highlights of a big week around the beautiful greens of the Warwick Golf club. March is always a main month on the golfing calendar, The championships are the main event for the year.
Majella Kahler led the field here on Wednesday, 6 March, with a great 37 points. Just ahead of Liz Cockram with 35 points. Lyn McKillop took out the front nine, with the rundown going to Janice Thomas, Yvonne Pinington, Kath Devereux, and Helen Olsen. The pro pin was shared amongst Ann Tomkins, Lynn Land and Janice Thomas.
Saturday, 9 March saw the third round of our club championships, sponsored by AOK Clothing.
Congratulations to Melanie McLennan for taking line honours with 69 nett, just ahead of Sam Hinze who also played well and had 71 nett. Liz Cockram secured the best front nine, on a countback from Donna Keogh. The pro pin was shared amongst Mary Young, Margaret Adcock, Annice Payne, and Jo McAntee.
Sunday 10 March, saw the fourth and final round of the Club Championships. Sunday was the deciding round. Although the wind certainly made the day a more challenging one. However, Carole Brandan stood up to win the days event, proudly sponsored by One Table Cafe and function centre Warwick. Carole had a great 74nett, surviving a four-way countback from Kath Devereux, Jo McAntee, and Melanie McLennan. Players in the rundown were Liz Cockram 76, Di Johnston 78, Narelle Norris 79, and Judy Lester 79. The pro pin was shared amongst Jo McAntee, Trish Bell, Sam Hinze, and Jill Barnes.
Congratulations to the final winners of the Warwick Golf Club Championships, and a big thankyou to Donna Keogh and Wickhams Freightline for generously sponsoring our Championships again this year. Samantha Hinze secured her 16th A Grade win, one that many could only dream of. Annice Payne secured her win with only a one-shot lead, but that’s all it takes. Carole Brandon was all smiles for not giving in and taking home the C Grade Trophy. B and C grade titles came down to the wire, and it was whoever could battle the wind well enough today, would take home the silverware. Narelle Norris secured herself the Veterans Trophy, while an excited newcomer Jo McAntee was all smiles after receiving the Carole Russell Memorial Shield from new sponsor Michelle Wright, from Michelle’s Wright-At-Home Hair Studio.
Saturday will be exciting, as the club celebrate’s it’s Centenary. For those who wish to play in the “Thank Goodness it’s Friday“ competition, or the Centenary celebratory game, please go online and secure a position or talk to Troy in the pro shop.
Stanthorpe Golf
Event sponsor Tod Beckett took the honors in the monthly medal played on Saturday 9 March.
A good field turned out for the day which was a complete contrast to previous Saturdays, this one being gusty winds and rather cold and a bit wet.
Beckett won the day with a nett 68 to qualify for the Medal of Medallists later in the year. Beckett passed the prizes down the list and lucky for Richard Reardon to collect the winner’s prize with nett 71. Both players had steady rounds and were able to overcome the wind and rain for good rounds.
Best gross score for the men’s event was 74 of the stick with Scott Constable and Hamish Adam both returning that score. Best putting for the men came from Hamish Adam needing only 24 putts for the round. Others to feature in the run down were Len Leigh (nett 72), Hamish Adam (nett 72), Keith Jones (nett 73) and Scott Constable (nett 73).
The ladies’ event was won by Lisa Stuart with a nett 76 which was two ahead of Nikki Waterworth in second place on nett 78. In the run down, Lorraine Evans (80) and Racheal Hendry (84) collected a voucher for their effort. The ladies nett winner, Lisa Stuart also collected for having the best gross score of 90 on the day.
Pro-pins for the men were collected by Hamish Adam at 1/10, Matt Burgess at 5/14 and David Burgess at 9/18. NTP’s went to Keith Jones for his tee shot at 3 and Scott Constable for his tee shot at 17. Favourable mention to Hamish Adam, for another great effort after he recorded an eagle at the par 5 eleventh hole.
Racheal Hendry held the ladies approach at 7/16 as well as collecting NTP at the twelfth hole. Two remaing NTP’s both taken by the ladies winner of the day. Lisa Stuart.
The day was also the first of three rounds played for the Pike Trophy. In this event, the best two rounds of the three will count for the final result, so for players who didn’t have such a good round, still plenty of hope.
Sunday 17 March, Sporters golf have the Maureen Bates Memorial two-ball ambrose nine hole event which is sponsored by Rex Bates. The time sheet for the day is on the board at the club and all players are welcome to play.
Saturday 16 March is a stroke event and the second round for the Pike Trophy, the day is being sponsored by Steve and Sandy Kay. Again, time sheet is available on line.
