Summit duo to represent region

The final of the Southern Downs Men’s Pairs was held at The Summit at the weekend with from left Frank Taylor and Dale Callaghan winning while SDMDBA president Bryce Titcume to award their trophies.

The Summit bowls club’s Frank Taylor and Dale Callaghan are set to represent the Southern Downs in the Zone pairs playoffs at the end of July.

The pair took on another pair from the club, Jamie Zamprogno and Tony Schubert in Saturdays final of the Southern Downs Men’s Pairs beating them 19-14.

The event had been started the previous weekend and the final was delayed to this weekend.

Schubert and Zamprogno led early in the game before Taylor and Callaghan came back to lead 13-9 after 14 ends.

Scores were then level at 14-all after 18 ends with Taylor and Callaghan finishing strongly to score five shots on the last three ends and take the victory.

The Summit congratulated both teams on the quality of the game considering the green was certainly fast. The club and district wish the pair all the best in the zone playoff at the end of July.

On Sunday the Summit hosted the trial games for the district sides competition to be held in May. Twenty-four bowlers took the opportunity to take part. The district hopes that all who participated gained some benefit from the day as the trials were played in a friendly but competitive spirit. These trials will help the selectors with their selection process. President Graeme is thanked for providing lunch on Sunday. Also a special thanks to those gave of their time, on this festival weekend, to prepare the greens, cook food and worked the bar on this weekend.

The next important event at the club will be Men’s Championship Singles. This event will be played on 23-24 March with nominations closing on Saturday, 16 March.

Warwick Bowls Club

Max Balfour has taken out the Warwick Bowls Club Men’s A grade singles title defeating Phil Wagner 26-23 in the final on Friday.

Earlier Wagner beat Gary Cooper 25-18 in the semies with Faye Flint as marker with Balfour outplaying Richard Tartan 25-18 in the other final under the watchful eye of marker- Russell Bean.

Results of Jack Pot Pairs on 28 February – Round one: Nat Kumseewad and Ray Southee beat Pamela Kerr and Brian Black +20-20; Max Balfour and John Ruhle defeated Shane Bailey and Barry Perks +21 – 21; Clark Davidson and David Scotney beat Darryl Phillips and Russell Bean +4 -4: 2nd Round – Skip’s name only: Ray Southee tied with Russell Bean 9/9; Brian Black defeated John Ruhle +2 -2; David Scotney beat Barry Frame +25 -25.

Friday 1 March – Evening Bowls at the Warwick Club ( names drawn out of the hat: Game one: Ray Southee, Denis Sterling and Gary Cooper defeated Nat Kumseewad, Barry Frame and John Ruhle 11-4; S. Bailey and Clark Davidson beat Max Balfour 8-7. Game two: Val Gray, Ray Southee and Max Balfour beat S Bailey, John Ruhle and Clark Davidson 7-4; Nat Kumseewad and Gary Cooper tied with Denis Sterling and Barry Frame 7/7. The Sausage Sizzle etc was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. The Chocolates for Touchers were won by Ray, John and Val.

Coming Events for March: N.B. On Friday Evenings and Sunday mornings Warwick are combining Bowls alternatively with Southern Cross. All welcome – age makes no difference. See details below. Warwick East

Friday’s evening bowls saw four games of triples played with Bill Lee winning while Peter Collis, Gunter Nicklich and Steve Tyter were equal runners-up.

On Saturday the club began the club-selected pairs competition. In the Ladies’ competition the final saw Julie Foster and Sue Butz defeat Margaret Wright and Shirley Alcock 30-11. In the Men’s competition we progressed to the semifinals, with the following results: Johnno Johnson and Bill Lee defeated Peter Collis and Wayne Dobbin 24-8, while Rob Alcock and Al Foster defeated Wayne Foster and John Harslett 21-12. The final is to be played this coming Friday evening.

Today (Thursday March 7) they have thier monthly triples competition, with play starting at 9 am. There will be evening bowls on Friday (March 8), starting at 6 pm, but there will be no social bowls on Saturday as they will be preparing for their March carnival on Sunday (March 10). Anyone having spare time on Saturday will be very welcome at the club working bee.
