Gremlins gearing up to celebrate

The Gremlins are coming - a lot of them too for the fiftieth anniversary of the Stanthorpe Gremlins Rugby League Club.

The Stanthorpe Gremlins continued a busy month of football on Saturday making the trip across the border to Boggabilla on Saturday for the a double-header round of Border Rugby League matches.

Club president Roger O’Brien said the club took on the Texas Terriers in both the men’s and women’s competition’s while the MacIntyre Warriors played the Roosters in the other games which were played as part of the Indigenous Round.

“It was a wonderful day and good football again but our ladies unfortunately got rolled 22-8 and the men lost 28-18,” he said.

“It was cold too – a pretty fresh old day out. But there was a good crowd. It was a good day of football.

“And we had a home game for our juniors taking on Tenterfield so it was a busy day up at Stanthorpe hosting the Tenterfield Tigers. But it was another successful day and a good crowd showed up to watch the kids as well. Then we had to split the seniors off to had to Boggabilla – it was a big day for the club. It was tough splitting – their were lots of kids who had parents in the senior teams and just splitting the volunteer base as well, doing two things on the same day. But we did it, it’s all good, it happens every time. It was a good days footy all around.”

This week the seniors have a bye while the juniors head to Goondiwindi to take on the Boars on.

“And then we’ll start gearing up for our big day on the 27th – our fifty year day,” O’Brien said.

“We have a big day planned for the 27th, the juniors take on Collegians and the seniors play McIntyre Warriors. Fourteen games of footy for the day. It kicks of at 8.30am with the juniors and finishes with the senior men’s at 2pm and then we pack up and head to the Stanthorpe Civic Centre for the 50 year event.

“Tickets are selling fast and are available through our Stanthorpe Rugby League Facebook site. There’s close to 200 already coming.

“It’s 50 years of Gremlins and 105 years as a club, you should celebrate those milestones.“
