Warwick East bowlers through to State final

Ossie McPaul and Lynn Collie competed in the Helen Harm Real Estate sponsored Turkey Triples at the Warwick Bowls Club on Tuesday, 6 August.

Warwick East Bowlers Sue Butz and Julie Foster have won the zone finals of the ladies’ pairs at the weekend.

The duo will now proceed to the state finals later in the year.

The result was part of a busy week for the Warwick East Club.

On Saturday in the mixed social bowls there were six games of triples.

The winners were John Harslett and Di Walsh. One of the visitors for the day, Bluey Rudd, was successful in winning a portion of the jackpot.

There will be no social bowls this coming Saturday, as most of the regulars will be playing in the pennants at The Summit.

Mixed social bowls will resume on Saturday, 24 August.

In the meantime, the club will have their monthly triples on Thursday, 22 August.

Play starts at 10am.

Nominations are now being called for our open three-bowl pairs competition to be held on Saturday, 31 August. There is a sign-on sheet on the noticeboard to register interest in participating.

Warwick Bowls Club

The team of Barry Perks, Ray Southee and Craig Thurgate came up with the best score to win the day in the Turkey Triples on 6 August

Runners-up were Gordon Assay, Matt Shepherd and Steve Tyter just beating the team of Jim Lamb, Polly Lay and Gary Trevena in a countback, however Team Polly picked up the last round winners prize.

Early morning rain meant bowlers had to clean their bowls for the first few ends until the green dried out, however, it ran pretty well, so some excellent heads were formed.

Saturday, 10 August was another fun day with 20 bowlers for social. Lorna Tucker won the lucky numbers raffle, John Ruhle won a Domino’s voucher and Craig Thurgate a free game.

Saturday, 17 August, social bowls at 1pm. Names down between 12pm and 12.30pm. Clubhouse 4661 1516. All welcome, especially beginners and travellers.

Wednesday, 21 August KFC sponsored Social Bowls at 1pm.

THE SUMMIT BOWLS NOTES

Results of social bowls from Saturday are as follows – Game One – Brian Wilmot, Michael Sweeney, David Stibbard and Rob Capelli defeated Ray Spiller, Matthew Murphy, Owen O’Brien and Tyler Sweney 24- 10; Game Two: Phil Davis. Alex Mattiazzi, Jamie Zamprogno and Tony Schubert beat Rod Crome, Pam Moore, Adrian Jackson and Glenn Preston 28-15; Game Three: Maree Ball and Carl Sutherland 17 defeated Mary Zanatta and Zel Zamprogno 16; Margaret Harvey, Eddie Zanatta and Paul Zamprogno 14 v Bill Carson and Cliff Jones 14. Winners for the afternoon were Pam Moore, Adrian Jackson and Tony Schubert.

The next event on the club’s competition calendar will be the Men’s B Grade Singles. This event is open to those who have not won a B Grade or and A Grade at any club. Nomination sheet is on the board. Nominations will close next Saturday.

The District Pennants will be played next weekend. The first division will be played on Saturday and Sunday. This is a state event and the winners will go on to a zone final in September. The other divisions will be played on Saturday. All teams and managers should be there before 8.30 as play will begin at 8.45am will roll ups. Players are expected to be in the approved club uniforms.

Calendar for the coming weeks: Saturday 17 August: District Pennants at The Summit – all three divisions; Sunday 18 August District Pennants – First Division only; Tuesday 20 August: Turkey Triples; Saturday 24 August; Men’s B Grade Singles.

Stanthorpe Bowls Club

The Stanthorpe Bowls Club will take part in the Division Two District Pennants competition to be held at the Summit Bowls Club on Saturday, 16 August.

Two Stanthorpe teams have been selected. Team One will include Polly Lay, Jack Bell, Wendy Hurnall and David Rose while Team Two is John Fairley, Brian Brown, Gary Trevena and Len

Girgenti. Emergency Reserves – Colin Denning and Shane Sheahan.

Social Bowls results to date are as follows. Caroline Draper, Polly Lay and Gary Trevena had a narrow one shot victory over Colin Denning, David Draper and John Fairley by 15 shots to 14. Rocky Thompson and Jeff Alldridge defeated Sylean Fairley and Ozzie McPaul by 21 shots to 12. David Draper and Jack Bell were defeated by Lorraine Evans and Polly Lay by 15 by shots to 22. Steve Sheahan and David Draper had an 18-all draw with Margaret Harvey and Colin Denning. Sylean Fairley and Len Girgenti had a convincing 22 to 4 victory over Brian Brown and John Fairley. Rocky Thompson and Greg Hammond had an eight-shot victory over the combination of Colin Denning and Jack Bell 23 shots to 15. Steve Sheahan and Jack Bell went down by 22-13 to Colin Denning and Len Girgenti.

Sixteen Bowlers from the Jayco Caravan Owners Club enjoyed a game of barefoot bowls and some great sunny weather at the Club on Saturday morning 10 August.

The 2024 ‘Open Triples Carnival’ will be held on Sunday, 6 October. The local Bendigo Community Bank and the Stanthorpe Golf Club will sponsor the event. Watch this space for further details.
