Hinze salutes at St George

The contingent of 12 ladies who represented the Warwick Golf Club at the Downs and South West District Championships held on the Sandgreens at St George this past week.

Warwick women’s golfers have excelled at this year’s Downs and South West Women’s District Championships held at St George this week, with Sam Hinze coming away of overall winner in the event.

A contingent of 12 Warwick golfers, Anne Lyons, Danielle, Joely Singleton, Liz Cockram, Majella Kahler, Margaret Adcock, Mary Young, Molly Scotney, Roslyn Darton, Sam Hinze, Trish Bell and Wendy Rhea travelled out to compete.

Each of the players played off a smaller handicap than they normally do, due to the course rating. This put several of the Warwick competitors into a higher division than they usually play in.

The Foursomes Championships were held the first day, with Trish and Ann taking out the best net for division 1, 71 nett. Cockram and Scotney teamed well to be runners up with 74 nett, while Young and Adcock had the best second nine with 37 nett.

The District Championships is a 36-hole event, and congratulations to own Sam Hinze, who played off scratch, and was the overall winner. Hinze won the open and closed championships, as well as the Silver division with 147 Gross. Sam also won the Champion of Champions over 18 holes, with 73 off the stick, for a 73 gross result, winning the Pat McIntyre Trophy.

Wendy Rhea, who was very comfortable playing on her once home course, taking out the best 36 hole nett in Bronze Division with 136 nett. Bell was the nett runner up in Division two with 70 nett, while on the last day, Margaret had the best Division One nett score with 67 nett, and Rhea again had the best nett in division three with 66 nett. St George extended their hospitality in such a fine manner, and everyone who attended had a great time. Next year’s event will be in Gatton.

At home in Warwick there was a smaller field of ladies playing due to the Championships in St George. But Di Evans had a great score of 37 points to beat Kath Devereux who was runner up with 35. Kath secured herself the pro pin on the 7th, sharing it with Yvonne Pinington, Leanne Manwarring, and Jill Barnes. The ball rundown went to Janet Davis, Ellie Casey, Carole Brandon, and Yvonne Pinington.

Saturday, 24 August saw a good field of ladies vie for a Club sponsored SS verses Par Trophy. Congratulations to the winners, who were obviously comfortable playing on their grassed greens again. Majella Kahler. Roslyn Darton who were joined by Janice Thomas all returning cards of +2. Majella taking out the win on a countback, with Roslyn being declared the runner up. Congratulations to Pro pin winners Narelle Norris, who shared it with Jill Barnes, Jo McAntee, and Margaret Adcock.

Congratulations to all of the winners this week, and a big thankyou to all the lovely ladies who represented us so well at District Championships. A special mention must go to Samantha Hinze, who the club believes would have had a very proud Grandpa if he were here. Buddy was an avid sand green golfer, and it looks like he must have passed his wisdom on to Sam.
