POLICE have again warned home owners to secure their property after a recent spate of thefts.
The Warwick CBD, Rosenthal Heights and west and east Warwick have been hardest hit by sneak thieves in recent weeks.
Offenders have been entering homes via unsecured doors and windows during the evening and early morning.
Thieves are even entering houses when people are at home.
Stolen property has included small items such as cash, electronic equipment and car keys.
“Many of these offences have involved unlocked or unsecured doors and windows that the offender has taken advantage of, which is why we are urging people to make sure their properties are secure,” Warwick Crime Prevention Co-ordinator, Senior Constable Wendy Tamblyn said.
“By ensuring doors and windows are locked even when you’re at home, and by keeping sought-after items such as phones, jewellery, wallets and electronics out of sight, each member of the community can help prevent this from occurring.”
Sen Const Tamblyn said a number of unsecured vehicles have also been targeted. Police are urging vehicles owners to remove valuables and lock their vehicles.
She said recent thefts had not involved break-ins, but opportunistic thefts made possible by bad security.
“If they try your car and it’s locked they’ll leave it alone and try the one next door,” she said.
“Neighbours can play a big role in preventing these offences by keeping an eye and ear out for each other,” she said.
“They can assist by collecting mail for those who are away and placing rubbish bins out at the usual collection time.”
Suspicious activity can reported to Warwick police on 4660 4444, or your local police station.
