Books a lasting gift

THE Tenterfield Hub is hosting a Community Giving Tree until 20 December.
It is an opportunity for anyone in the town to come in and help themselves to a free gift – the only twist is that all the gifts are books.
The Book Giving Tree aims to promote reading and literacy in the community and to help create awareness of the Hub’s Adult Literacy Support Program which kicked off this year.
“Having books in family homes and reading stories helps build a learning culture,” Hub co-ordinator Gail Galloway said.
“For parents of young children, especially those starting school -the sharing of books and reading can improve a child’s learning development.
“This is one small way of tackling the generational problem of illiteracy,” Ms Galloway said.
“It is never too late to learn and any adults who would like the opportunity of free numeracy and literacy support should call at the Hub to find out more, or simply drop in and get a free book.”
Ms Galloway said any visitor to the Hub can take advantage of the book tree.
Likewise anyone can donate books, old or new, on any subject and for any age group.
