Water parity for rural folk

RURAL residents living in the Goondiwindi Regional Council area will now be able to access water for domestic use at the same charge as urban consumers.
Council has adopted a policy that will enable residents in drought-declared areas to purchase water at the same rate as those residents connected to council’s articulated water system.
Councillor Rick McDougall said the entire Goondiwindi Regional Council area was drought declared by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry on 1 March 2014.
“With a dryer than average summer season predicted, many residents have expressed their concerns in relation to the availability of affordable water for domestic use as their water supplies dry up,“ he said.
“This is a council determined to stand by the people in its rural communities in good times and bad, and I am pleased to announce that council has responded to these concerns.“
Eligible residents who wish to take advantage of this assistance will be required to show proof of residency and pay any charges prior to collection.
Water can be collected from council’s nominated fill points in Goondiwindi, Inglewood and Texas during nominated collection times.
