FOR those of you who thought Sew We Create was just an art and craft shop, or a great place to get some new patchwork sewing supplies, Sue and Lynda can help with that. But did you know there are all sorts of creative workings going on in the back room?
With the help of Lynda and Sue, the five young ladies pictured, have just finished creating their first after-school sewing project. Starting in January, every Thursday and or Friday afternoon, these girls have been meeting at Sew We Create from 3.30pm-5pm to learn about sewing and create simple but lovely garments and useful items from a variety of materials.
“The aim of these classes is to encourage young people, both boys and girls, to see how easy it is to create your own look and style through sewing. The classes also encourage confidence building around a sewing machine and use of simple tools such as scissors, measuring tape and other related sewing instruments.”
Students in the group so far have completed a T-shirt and shorts ensemble using stretch fabric and light cottons and have now moved on to a winter fleece poncho. Down the track other projects include a library bag and a table runner using patchwork sewing techniques.
“Students will find straight sewing isn’t as easy as it looks,” Sue said
Sew We Create junior sewing classes are held Thursday and Friday from 3.30pm-5pm at 147 Palmerin Street, Warwick.
