A MAN has been jailed for receiving around $18,000 in Centrelink benefits he wasn’t entitled to.
The 52-year-old man applied for Newstart in 2011 when made redundant but found employment two weeks later. He continued to receive payments until April 2012.
During that time he is believed to have spent a lot of the money gambling on pokies, keno and the lotto.
Warwick Magistrates’ Court heard he earned over $57,000 while employed during that time but only declared $1300. He is also in the process of paying off a $13,000 child support debt.
He was sentenced to nine months in jail to be suspended after one month. He was also placed on a two-year good behaviour bond and ordered to pay all the money back to Centrelink.
