BOMBS away as the Warwick Art Gallery yarnbombing team gets preparations underway for this year’s Jumpers and Jazz in July.
The group has exciting plans for this year, but is looking for help.
From the humble beginnings of a yarnbombed VW Beetle in 2010, the ever expanding team have been surprising festival goers with more fabulous and ambitious projects each year.
The very popular Knitchen of 2014, a life-sized retro kitchen created entirely from yarn by a team of 50, was a huge hit with thousands of festival visitors.
Last year, the combined efforts of 100 knitters and crocheters resulted in the spectacular Woollow Tree.
A celebration of the Southern Downs seasons, the tree spread its colourful branches over the Warwick Art Gallery courtyard, bringing smiles to faces with many delightful knitted and crocheted details.
Warwick Art Gallery assistant and yarnbombing co-ordinator Loretta Grayson said she had big plans for this year’s festival and enjoyed meeting new team members just as much as working on the project itself.
“Everyone is welcome to join us”, says Loretta.
“We have many wonderful locals who help us out, as well as people from all over Australia who post their contributions to us. You can knit or crochet at home, or enjoy the creative atmosphere of our group meetings.”
This year the team is taking their talents to the centre of the Warwick CBD, where a colourful “yarntopian” garden of delights will grow, creating a cosy oasis for the enjoyment of festival goers.
Intrigued? If you can knit or crochet a square, you can be part of the fun! For the first stage of their plans, the team are looking for hundreds each of 20cm crocheted granny squares in shades of green, and 20cm knitted squares in shades of blue.
