HomestoriesAutumn Lane

Autumn Lane

Take a walk on a fresh day in autumn

Down a leaf-strewn lane

Hand-in-hand with someone you love

And gaze in awe at the russet display

At your feet and in wooded grove

Take your time to amble along

Sample the carpet of yellow and golden

Crumble the auburn and tan under your soles

Hear the symphony of dry-leaf music

That echoes down Autumn Lane

Take hold of the hand of the child that is yours

And build up sweet friendship to last through the years

Soak up the exhibition of a season in splendour

Derive inner peace from the therapeutic scene

Before the spring brings back the green

Let the xanthophyll’s yellow of Poplar and Birch

The anthocyanin’s red of Maple and Oak

Dazzle your eyes and take away your breath

As alkaline sap turns leaves purple and violet

Acid will manufacture the reds and the scarlets

Promise yourself you’ll walk down a lane

On a blue autumn sky day wherever you live

Hear the carpet rustle; see the trees blaze with colour

Soak up the exhibition of creation’s splendour

And remember! It will encore the following year
