Warwick netballers part of Queensland history

Warwick’s Laura Geitz and Clare McMeniman played a huge role in what may be Queensland’s first ever elite netball title.
The Queensland Firebirds dominated Sunday’s grand final against the Northern Mystics, winning by 13 goals, which is the largest winning margin in an ANZ Championship grand final.
They also made history by being the only team to go right through the championship undefeated.
According to the Firebirds’ website, the netballers received the Keys to the City in Brisbane yesterday, which is Brisbane’s highest honour, with just 31 known recipients in the city’s history.
The 57-44 win over the Mystics secured the Firebirds’ first ever ANZ Championship title. Queensland had never won a Commonwealth Bank trophy, Australia’s premier netball competition prior to the launch of the ANZ Championship. This trophy started in 1997.
McMeniman said their grand final win had resulted in a lot of media coverage, which was great for netball.
She felt privileged to be a part of the starting line-up for the big game.
“It was a real honour and something that I’ve been working for all year,” McMeniman said.
Her advice to children growing up in regional areas: “Really enjoy yourself and take the most out of the opportunities that you get”.
Geitz produced the first and last intercept of the grand final, adding to her already amazing season, after being announced the ANZ Championship player of the series.
