Fighting for family values

The Australian Family Association (AFA), in conjunction with the National Civic Council, hosted a dinner at the International Club in Stanthorpe recently.
The night was part of a series of functions held across the Southern and Darling Downs to inform people about their work in upholding family values and fighting for the interests of all citizens.
The chilly weather proved no deterrent to the crowd and local priest Fr Lino Valente welcomed the guests with his usual charm, setting the scene for an enjoyable and informative evening.
Guest speakers for the evening were Gabrielle Walsh, Victorian president and Luke McCormack, Queensland president of the National Civic Council.
Their topics ranged from community action groups who deal with local issues to the recent legal challenges to proposed reclassification of x-rated films to allow them to be available in video stores. The direct action of AFA resulted in wins right through to the High Court.
Ms Walsh shared some of her rich experience in fighting for pro-life and pro-family issues, a task based on her own roles as mother of seven and grandmother to 12. Her academic qualifications are in teaching, social justice, theology and religious education.
Mr McCormack was able to field many of the complex questions surrounding economics and the task of supporting small enterprise and business.
His talk centred on how we can defend the family, the economy and the nation from the threats to their well-being by taking affirmative action.
The evening concluded with an appeal from Brisbane teacher and father of nine, Bob Osmak, for local support for the organised fight to defend human life and dignity and support the family as the basis of society.
The AFA can be contacted on (07) 3323 3899 for more details.
