Young Delegates Project getting ready to start

This weekend will see the start of the 2011 Young Delegates Projects.
The Young Delegates are the Southern representatives of the Southern Downs Regional Council’s Young Ambassador and Young Delegates program (YAs and YDs). The role of the Young Delegates is to identify needs and issues for young people and be a representative for young people to CDS and the council.
As part of the YAs and YDs program, the representatives are encouraged to run a community project.
Tomorrow, Sahra Costanzo is running a Youth Bowl Off and Disco to encourage young people to come together and have a fun time while learning about the effects of drugs and alcohol.
The night runs from 6.30pm to 9.30pm at Shake Rattle and Bowl.
Teams of four people, with prizes for the best team and individual bowler will be on offer.
The night aims to encourage young people who are attending school to enter a team in the bowling competition.
During the night there will be small rounds of trivia questions regarding the effects and impacts of drugs and alcohol, which have great prizes to be won. Entry is $5.
There will also be a dance display by dance instructors Jay, Sarita and Stinna who will be delivering workshops this weekend as part of Rebekah Ioane’s youth project.
Rebekah is hosting a series of hip hop dance workshops for young people between the age of 12 and 25. Bek’s family are visiting from New Zealand too, and have kindly offered to deliver dance workshops for local young people while they are in Stanthorpe.
Bek’s brother Jay, 17, and sisters Sarita, 15, and Stinna, 22, have been learning and teaching dance for the past five years.
They are looking forward to meeting and working with the local young people.
Jay is part of a break dancing crew in New Zealand called Loko Motion.
Workshops will be held on both Saturday and Sunday from 9.30am to 12pm at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre supper room.
There will also be follow-up workshops on August 13-14.
Morning tea and drinks will be provided. Cost is $5 per workshop to help cover room hire and catering.
This weekend’s workshops have limited spaces, so bookings are essential.
