Mary Rofe welcomes demerger opportunity

The appointment of Boundaries Commissioner Col Meng is welcome news, according to local Mary Rofe.
Ms Rofe said the groundswell of support for demerger of the Southern Downs region is growing daily, as residents see the negative effects caused by forced amalgamation and continue to pay for them out of their own pockets.
“The scaremongers wave the cost flag as though amalgamation has done what (Peter) Beattie claimed and saved us money but the reverse has become reality,” she said.
“Every day the costs of running the bigger region grow greater.
“We were told that reducing the number of councillors would save us money yet the remunerations for each of them rose because the area governed is greater.
“The number of councillors available to residents has effectively decreased, whilst bureaucracy has become more distant and process driven.
“This opportunity to bring our representatives closer to the people they serve is a good move and one which will lead to each former shire regaining their sense of identity and purpose.
“As I announced at the close of my campaign for a council seat, a group has been formed to carry this mission forward and collect the necessary signatures,” she said.
The Boundary Review Action Group welcomes supporters and input. For more detail, contact Mary Rofe on (07) 4681 0805.
