Landcare meets to plan for future

Garry Turner, chair, Millmerran Landcare Group speaks to Cassandra Teale, Special Projects, Queensland Murray Darling Committee.
Landcare chairs and staff from across the Condamine Catchment recently met in Warwick to discuss and plan for the future of Landcare across the region for the next 12 months.
Independent facilitator Jeanette Long worked with the group to reaffirm the purpose of Darling Downs Regional Landcare (DDRL) and to identify critical actions to take the group forward.
DDRL brings together seven Landcare areas from the Condamine Headwaters based in Warwick, through to Chinchilla. DDRL was established to provide a forum for networking and sharing between Landcare groups.
As people and focus changes within individual groups, DDRL is there to offer support and to mentor Landcare groups to improve their function.
Of increasing importance is the role the organisation plays to facilitate opportunities and funding for coordinated on-ground project activities and to improve working relationships with regional natural resource management bodies such as Condamine Alliance and Queensland Murray Darling Committee.
Norm Burton, chair of Condamine Headwaters Landcare Group, was very pleased to host the event.
“In the next 12 months, Landcare needs to streamline our processes to deliver greater outcomes within our local communities,” Mr Burton said.
“Now is the time to be promoting the energy and achievements within the Landcare movement, raising the Landcare profile with a range of investors that will hopefully deliver on-ground benefits to our members,” he said.
One of the key outcomes of the day was the resolution to meet with the chief executive officers from Condamine Alliance and Queensland Murray Darling Committee to try and facilitate a more coordinated approach to projects within the Condamine Catchment area.
“Each individual Landcare group knows what their local members need to deliver improved natural resource management outcomes,” Mr Burton said.
“It is important that opportunities are pursued to share this information with the regional groups so it can be included in their work plans,” he said.
The next meeting of DDRL will be held on August 24. If you have any issues you would like discussed at this regional forum, contact your local Landcare group.
