Telstra technicians installing the ‘top hats’.

More Warwick households and businesses are set to gain access to fast fixed-line broadband, following Telstra’sinstallation of ADSL2+ infrastructure in the area.
Telstra Country Wide Area General Manager for South Queensland, Nigel Beaman, said Telstra is integrating new technology, referred to as ‘top hats’, into the existing street cabinets that deliver telephone services to local residents and businesses.
“The ‘top hats’ are an innovative way of mounting ADSL2+ equipment on top of an existing street-side cabinet which provides phone services. This means that we are able to quickly and efficiently make ADSL2+ services available to many households and businesses that previously could not access a fixed broadband service,” said Mr Beaman.
“The upgrade will support our customers’ growing interest in connecting household communication devices to the internet so that they can enjoy information and entertainment on demand. Being connected to ADSL2+ broadband technology will enable households to stream video, access their favourite internet sites and work from home.”
Until now, these existing cabinets have not been able to support ADSL2+ technology due to physical constraints.  Previously, a new cabinet would have been built alongside an existing one, which could take months of planning and network construction activities.
The installation of two‘top hats’ in Warwick is part of a nationwide infrastructure investment where a number of ‘top hats’ will be installed in street-side cabinets over the course of 18 months as Telstra continues to invest in innovative communications solutions across the country to bring faster broadband speeds and improved technology where possible.
The rollout is expected to be completed by mid-2013, and also involves an upgrade to the transmission backhaul which will help remove potential bottlenecks in the network. Warwick residents can contact Telstra BigPond on 13 76 63 or visit their local store at Shop 3, Rose City Shopping World, 81 Palmerin Street for further information.
