Minister for Health The Hon Tanya Plibersek and the Attorney General The Hon Nicola Roxon took time from their busy parliamentary schedule to read through advertising flyers created by Wallan-garra State School students, and both were thrilled to see thoughtful work of such a high standard.
Minister Roxon wrote a personal note on all the children’s work and the Attorney General displayed the flyers at a Cancer Council event.
Both ministers sent their sincere thanks to the students, with Minister Plibersek reminding the students that half the people who start smoking will die as a result of smoking-related illnesses.
The students’ anti-smoking advertisement was developed within a combined Health, ICT and Studies of Society and Environment school unit.
The cigarette plain packaging legislation has passed through Parliament and comes into effect on December 1 this year. A recent High Court challenge to the legislation by the tobacco companies failed.
