Ugly duckling gets a makeover

The “Old Butcher Shop” is all set for a makeover.

The “Old Butcher Shop” 23 Willow Street has a new lease on life, with new owners and a new community project sponsored by Killarney Area Promotion Association (KAPA).
KAPA secretary Joanne Ryan said, “We are so fortunate to have received encouragement and support for the project from a philanthropic community member who has seen the potential of this unloved, charming little building. Purchasing the old shop is an act of faith in the community to rise to the occasion and assist in the beautification process, as its neglected state certainly did not make it an attractive investment proposition.”
The project has attracted funding from the Queensland Alliance for Mental Health Inc Micro-Grants program to assist communities that were affected by the flooding events in 2011. This funding will enable the building that has been empty for a long time to be tidied up and converted into a shop-front and large multipurpose space suitable for a wide range of activities, with funds for furniture and other equipment dependent on the decided community use.
Come along to a preliminary working bee at the “shop”, after 8am on Saturday, September 29, to find out what, when cleaned up, the building could offer Killarney area residents and visitors. Bring your ideas and become involved in creating this fantastic community resource.
If you can’t make it on Saturday but would like some more information, ring Joanne 46 641 656 or email kapa@killarney.org.au
