Community gets behind Slade House

After many years of sitting idle, the historic Slade House is getting a make-over and the community is getting behind it.
On November 10, Warwick Christian College is hosting a community fund-raising dinner in the Slade Dining Hall to help raise funds to restore the house. The Principal of the College, Mr Terrence McCorkell, said that many local businesses had already donated a range of items which will be auctioned off on the night.
“People are already purchasing places at the dinner,” Mr McCorkell said, “and a three-course dinner on the night is only $50 and, if you buy a table of eight, you only pay for seven.”
Slade House was built in the very early 1900s and will soon be 100 years old. Having been the silent witness to a long history on the site, the College is looking forward to helping the community breathe new life into the homestead.
Members of the community or community groups wishing to book a table for the night should call the College on 4661 7554 or download an invitation from the College website www.warwickcc.qld.edu.au
The Slade School Past Students’ Association has a comprehensive website of stories and photographs which document part of the history of the house. The site reports that it was built in about 1918 by the East Family and sold to the Warwick Parish around 1926. At that stage it was called ‘Eastmont’ and stood as the founding building for what has now become a permanent part of Warwick’s history and future.
