Five generations of images

One of the images from ‘A Legacy of Light’.

An exhibition by Warwick artists explores the historic journey of a family through the evolving medium of photography.
A Legacy of Light is a photographic exhibition profiling five photographers from the same Queensland family, spanning a 150-year period from 1863 – 2012.
The exhibition will be touring regional Queensland as part of the Artslink Queensland’s Exhibition Touring Program.
This exhibition features the photographic work of five generations from one family – Christopher Roggenkamp (first generation), Norman Roggenkamp (second generation), Kevin Doody (third generation), John and Paul Doody (fourth generation), and Patrick Doody (fifth generation).
Beginning in regional south-ern Queensland, the story captures life in the early settlements, gradually showing how people, time and technology evolve through their legacies.
A Legacy of Light traces the historic, cultural and artistic journeys of these photographers’ personallives and experiences, while unequivocally being in appreciation of what preceded them.
Exhibition Touring Program Director Lisa Beilby says, “This significant collection of photographs showcases a cultural and a familial heritage through the documentation of moments, memories, landscapes and the fascinating evolution of photography as a medium for family storytelling.”
History and ancestry of a family can be easily lost, people pass before grandchildren are born and generations never meet. A Legacy of Light connects past and present generations in a way very rarely experienced.
The unique and significant body of work from one bloodline will encourage people to think about their own family through its past and present, as well as their future legacy. This exhibition showcases the heritage and development of a long line of people connected by one clear passion: photography.
