Pipes to be flushed

HIGH water levels in local dams have prompted the Southern Downs Regional Council to conduct pipe flushing of Warwick’s water mains.
The routine maintenance program has been deferred over recent years due to concerns for water supply.
However, prolonged wet weather has replenished the region’s dams with the Connolly Dam at 99 per cent and Leslie Dam at 74 per cent capacity.
Council’s director of Engineering Services, Peter See said avoiding potential health issues was the main reason for the pipe flushing.
“Flushing refreshes pipes where water can stagnate and become a potential health problem. Flushing also eliminates any sediments that may have accumulated over an extended period,” Mr See said.
“Refreshing the water at the dead ends is to ensure that the water has adequate levels of chlorine, considering that chlorine does deteriorate over time.”
“This can also be necessary at times to comply with the regulations.”
