FOR the next month, council staff will be flushing water hydrants and mains in the Stanthorpe and Wallangarra areas.
Engineering Services director Peter See said some water discolouration may be experienced for a short time afterwards.
As with the Warwick region, this routine maintenance program has been deferred over recent years due to concerns over the water supply, he said.
The wet weather experienced over the past few years has replenished the water supplies of the region’s dams.
“Flushing the mains refreshes the pipes where water can stagnate and become a potential health problem,” Mr See said.
“Flushing also eliminates any sediments that may have accumulated over an extended period.”
A similar maintenance program is being carried out in the Warwick area.
Mr See said the current high storage levels at Connolly Dam (99 per cent), and Leslie Dam (74 per cent) indicated that there are adequate water reserves to enable this activity to take place at this time.
“As a matter of responsible management of this process, council would closely monitor the water levels within the dams and modify the flushing program as necessary,” he said.
