Sonia’s making moves

SHE honed her skills as a news journalist before spending the past 20 years as public affairs manager for the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service.

But when Sonia Wood received the call for a job offer from the Southern Downs Regional Council earlier this month, she decided it was time to start a new chapter in her career as the council’s media and communications manager.
Mrs Wood said she was delighted to be joining the council where she has already received a warm welcome.
“I’ve had a really good first week meeting staff and settling in – it’s been really welcoming,” she said.
Mrs Wood said her interest in local government politics was inherited from her father, Joe Galeano, who was mayor of Cardwell Shire Council for 16 years.
“When I noticed the job advertised, I thought it sounded like a new and exciting challenge for me – I’ve always had a strong interest in local government,” she said.
Mrs Wood will work closely with the Free Times in her media liason duties for the Southern Downs Regional Council.
Her appointment follows the establishment of the Southern Downs Regional Council’s new community contact centre.
The contact centre is staffed by up to 17 council call centre operators based at the Warwick council chambers.
The 1300 MY SDRC phone number can now be used to contact council.
