Jazz artists unite

Aperitif Jazz Ensemble, based in Warwick, is giving its support to the Southern Downs Jazz Society (SDJS) by acting as ‘house band’, providing the backing music for visiting jazz artists and musicians.
Already abundant with country music, Warwick is now also well-known for its annual Jumpers and Jazz in July winter festival where jazzy tunes can be heard all over town – in the streets, restaurants, cafes, parks and other venues – to the delight of its numerous visitors.
To further cultivate interest in jazz in the district, a group of jazz lovers got together last year and formed the Southern Downs Jazz Society.
Sponsored by O’Mahoney’s Hotel, SDJS held bi-monthly then monthly jazz nights at the hotel, presenting a variety of singers, bands and musicians.
Keen to make these events more accessible and attract new members, a decision was made recently to try a new venue and time.
“Starting in October, we will be holding our events at the Palace Hotel on the first Sunday afternoon of every month from 2pm,” SDJS president Terry Gilchrist said.
“O’Mahoney’s Hotel and Joan Wallace have been very supportive of the society over the last 18 months and Joan has been very understanding about the change of venue,” Mr Gilchrist said.
“SDJS aims to bring various soloists from the Downs and Brisbane to keep jazz live all year round in Warwick. The new time and venue promises a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon, especially with summer approaching. Lunch is available and bookings are recommended.”
