True democracy

Roy Hopkins reckons he’s a Republican. Yet he’s devised a complicated system where we can elect someone to replace the Queen. (QCL letters 17/11)
Why replace her at all? In Australia’s history, our ties with England have only brought us pain and death! But we could have got that done, without the drama.  We don’t need a head of state. We’ve got an elected prime minister! That’s enough. They’re a waste of money, among other things.
One thing Australia doesn’t need to do is follow the failed American model. No, what we need to be is original.  Let’s become the world’s first true democracy and give our citizens the power to permanently sack politicians we don’t like. That sure beats having them pushed on us by the major political parties, year after year, after year, after year and so on!

Richmond
