Another referendum! The Julia gang has decided that they want to have a referendum to recognise Aboriginal people in the Constitution. The last time there was a referendum concerning Aboriginal people it was to give the Commonwealth Government the powers over them that were originally exercised by the States. Few would have considered at that time (1967) that it would open the door to widespread Aboriginal land claims. I’m sure those who pushed for that referendum knew the “hidden agenda”.
If we are going to recognise Aboriginal people in the Constitution it is necessary to define what it means to be Aboriginal. At the present time anyone who says they are Aboriginal is accepted as such and no enquiries as to their bona fides is permitted. Citizens, you should carefully consider how you vote when this latest proposed referendum comes to a ballot box near you.
