Joy Newman defeated Pauline Smith in the opening Association croquet game at Stanthorpe on 20 February.
Smith started off well, leading by three hoops for most of the game.
She scored two peels, one being an Irish peel (two balls through hoop on one stroke). Newman scored three peels and caught Smith on the last three hoops, where errors of strategy and accuracy on Smith’s part allowed Newman to win the game by 26 to 20.
Golf Croquet – 21 February
Game one – Kathy Hopgood (1), Liz Ellway (4) and Shaneen McLellan (1) played against Kim Steele (5), Eric McLellan (4) and (2). Steele played well, scoring the first three hoops, and five hoops in all. E McLellan played two balls to even up the team, scoring six hoops in total. While Hopgood, Ellway and S McLellan played gallantly, Steele and E McLellan won 11-6.
Game two – S and E McLellan played against Steele and Ellway. A closely fought game with Ellway scoring nine hoops and E McLellan scoring seven, and a hole in one. Steele and Ellway prevailed, winning 13 to 11.
Gateball – 23 February
Game one – Les Williams and Pauline Smith played against Joy Newman and Sharyn Roser. Williams and Smith struggled to get their balls active on the court with only one active ball after the first round (all balls played from 1 to 10). Newman and Roser had a commanding lead throughout the game. Even though Williams and Smith scored one agari, they were unable to catch up. Final score 12 to 9 to Newman and Roser.
Game two – Williams and Smith played against Newman and Roser again. Scores were even pegging through the first round with both teams scoring four balls each through gate 1. Both teams also scored one of their balls through gate 3, but Williams and Smith had two more balls through gate 2, winning 9 to 7.
Game three – Roser and Newman played against Williams. Roser and Williams were too good, winning by 16 to 8.
Game four – Newman and Williams played against Roser. A very close game with Roser winning 10 to 9.
